"It would, of course, have been unthinkable that God should go back upon His word and that man,
having transgressed, should not die"
Athanasius, On the Incarnation
And how will man be redeemed from death unless another takes his place and bears his punishment? Forgiveness without substitution would mean that every word of God did not prove true after all.

Jesus paid a penalty that is less than the punishment we deserved, because a crucifixion is not eternal conscious torment in hell. The problem with PSA is stupid people trying to use it to found the false doctrine of OSAS by asserting "He took my full punishment so now I can rape everyone on earth and still be saved! Wooohooo!" So long as the version of PSA believed in acknowledges that OSAS is a false doctrine from hell, and that Jesus only paid enough to enable our salvation but not to secure it for those who will (as Peter calls it) "turn the grace of God into a cloak of maliciousness" then there is nothing wrong with PSA. But using PSA as a Satanic tool to found the Satanic vile demonic grotesque doctrine of OSAS that Calvinist pastors use to justify their raping underage girls in their churches, that is the problem.
